Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SAT?

The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is a nationally standardized test designed to evaluate a student’s verbal and math abilities. It is taken by more than 80% of college-bound students, typically in their junior year. This test is one of the most critical elements of a college application because of the great weight admissions counselors give to SAT performance when considering a student for admission.

What is the GRE?

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a nationally standardized test designed to evaluate a student’s ability to perform graduate level work. Students who wish to pursue a Ph.D. or Masters degree are required by most universities to take this test as a part of their application for admission.

How important is vocabulary?

A good vocabulary is essential. The verbal sections of the SAT and GRE account for 50 percent of the overall score. It measures a student’s knowledge of thousands of college-level words, any of which may appear on a given exam. A student can not rely solely on a good math score. In order to achieve the overall test score colleges and universities demand, a student must do well on both test sections.

How many words should be studied?

The more words studied the better the results. Many tutors and study books focus on about 1,500 frequently occurring vocabulary words. While this is enough to produce higher scores, the well-prepared student should be familiar with many more. The 3,000 words used in the Easy-Prep vocabulary system are the result of a sophisticated computer analysis of previous SAT and GRE exams as well as other standardized college-level exams.

Is a study book or prep class enough?

Flash cards offer convenience that books can’t provide. Books use word lists. A word list is more of a reference than a study aid. In contrast, flash cards provide the means for easy self-tutoring and quick learning. They can be sorted to concentrate on different words and shuffled to vary the word order. They can be carried anywhere and studied anytime. Studying a few words each day during spare moments is easy and can add up to several hours a week without taking time away from other activities.

What other types of flash cards are available?

Most flash card sets claim to feature about 250 vocabulary words. However, many vocabulary words typically appear on a single card. This makes learning difficult. Easy-Prep Flash Cards use only one word per card to enhance the association between a given word and its definition. The Easy-Prep vocabulary system is unmatched in terms of scope, quality, and affordability.

The test is months away... Why should I order now?

The SAT and GRE tests are so important to a student’s life that many students become nervous weeks before the test. This is not the best environment for learning. Early preparation gives students verbal mastery and confidence that last minute cramming can’t provide.
